We are often told to be fearless in the pursuit of our dreams.
For Shyam Kumar it was art.
At the age of eight, he wanted to be an artist, but life – as it always does – had other plans for him. After studying architecture, Shyam spent the next few years working at different firms, until he decided to risk everything and dive head on into the world of art.
This was eight months back.
Dabbling with watercolours, a medium that pushes the artist in him to seek new challenges, Shyam says his work is heavily inspired by Zen Buddhism, and is largely introspective. Born and raised in Andhra Pradesh, the man set out on a journey to chase his passion and find himself along the way.
“I love to portray energy, as it lets the viewer experience subtlety, but at the same intensity. Creating mysterious spaces in the canvas that will lead the viewer to dwell into and ponder each time drives me to paint more. Not letting thought enter the space and going with the flow, I let the moment lead me further. I find myself just a tool through which the universe wishes to express itself”, he says.
Calling himself a YouTube learner, Shyam incorporates intense blasts of colour into his artwork, leaving a lasting impression on the viewer.

Having travelled across the country, Shyam’s last stop was a Bodhi Centre in Kodaikanal. Currently residing at Living Vikasa Vidya Vanam at Vijayawada, he organises workshops on art and lateral thinking for kids.
Shyam ultimately plans on fulfilling his dream of opening his own school.
